On The Road Again: Fremont to Fernly

So, for the first time in three years we are taking a (late) spring road trip as we used to do until we were so rudely interrupted by a disease.

This year's road trip is quite modest as befits the times. We are heading east to visit friends in Colorado and will take four days going out, spend a week there and then head back.

As always our goal is to find interesting places on an ad hoc basis as we go.

Our first day took us from home to Fernly, Nevada via Lake Tahoe, a place that my family of origin began visiting in the mid-1960s and where my parents summered into the 1990s. My wife and I were married nearby in Reno and honeymooned in LT. Lake Tahoe is always a sentimental journey.

Mostly today we drove with a break for a couple mile hike along Spooner Lake.

From there we went across the Mount Rose Road, one of my father's favorites to get an overlook on the lake.
And then an hour east to Fernly. Logistics dictated the location, but there we found a good Mexican restaurant, Ital Guadalajara, cooking in the style of the state of Jalisco. And dessert came from Steve's Homemade Ice Cream. Both lived up to their favorable reviews.

An added surprise was roadside art.

And that's it for Thursday.

Friday takes us a scant 209 mils to a favorite town of ours, Elko, Nevada. According to legend, Elvis was seen here after his supposed death. Will we see him? Probably not, but this is the desert and strange things happen out here.
