Toward Salt Lake

Saturday, was a looooong day. Taking off from I-80 we headed north on Nevada State Route 233 and then on Route 30 across to Utah. Thinking of the pioneers who crossed the Great Basin in days, not hours, we felt pity. These were the highlights of the landscape.

Presumably these are wind tunnels. Native Americans knew better than to try to live out here,. They only skirted the plains.

Otherwise it was flat and desolate, dotted by occasional hardscrabble ranches. The main thing I could say for it was that we were able to traverse it quickly at speeds that would have gotten us in serious trouble had there been anyone to observe other than other motorists going almost as fast.

Once we got north of the Great Salt Lake and near Ogden things got more interesting. We decided we needed a break from driving  and we rambled the 25th Street Historic District in Ogden happily for an hour.

Peery's Egyptian Theater, built in the 1920s was a special treat

Then, out of Ogden on I-84 along the Weber River came this, called the Devil's Slide.

Scenery and greenery

This is the Devil's Slide and no, it is not man made, but rather a limestone upthrust into which eons of wear cut this chute about 7 meters wide.

Or, if you prefer the local version this is the spot where  Satan was expelled from heaven and sent to hell.
